One of the most cherished and powerful quilt designs in Hawaiian history is Kuʻu Hae AlohaMy Beloved Flag. Following the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1895 and the forced abdication of Queen Liliʻuokalani, the Hawaiian flag was lowered, and many feared it would never fly again. In response, Native Hawaiian quilters began preserving the symbols of the kingdom through their art. These quilts became a sacred expression of identity, resistance, and aloha — never used for everyday purposes, but treasured as heirlooms.

We are honored to offer this exquisite example of a Royal Hawaiian flag quilt, carefully preserved and accompanied by family lineage to be passed on with reverence. Crafted from bold red, white, and blue cotton, the flags are treadle-machine pieced and detailed with fine white piping and topstitching. The Union Jack is meticulously rendered in each canton, and the hand-appliquéd coat-of-arms and Hawaiian motto — Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono (The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness) — display masterful skill and deep cultural significance.

Hand-quilted with crosshatch stitching on the white ground and parallel lines across the flags, the quilt features a soft white cotton backing and a ⅜" applied binding in matching blue.

A true work of textile art and an irreplaceable piece of Hawaiian history, this quilt is both a visual statement and a deeply emotional symbol — a treasured piece to be preserved and passed on.
