About Us

Our gallery showcases the private art collection of Watters Martin Jr., a lifelong collector with a deep reverence for Hawai‘i’s culture, beauty, and creative legacy. Spanning decades, this curated assemblage reflects not only a collector’s eye but a historian’s heart — honoring the stories, landscapes, and artists that have shaped island life through the years.

From vintage Hawaiiana to original works by beloved local artists, each piece has been lovingly preserved and now finds new life as part of an intimate viewing experience. Rooted in aloha and family stewardship, the gallery offers a glimpse into one man’s devotion to the islands and the art that captures their soul.

Founder & Collector

Watters O. Martin Jr.

Watters, a native Hawaiian, was raised in a home where artists were celebrated and conversations about creativity were commonplace. He developed an early love for art. Though his family appreciated artists, serious collecting didn’t begin until the 1970s, when he started building his own collection from the ground up.

With no formal guidebooks or digital resources, his education came the old-fashioned way: through countless hours spent at Iolani Palace, the Bishop Museum, and the Honolulu Academy of Arts. In a time when few were discussing the significance of Hawai‘i’s local artists and cultural artifacts, he immersed himself in research, exploration, and admiration — quietly uncovering stories, techniques, and traditions that many had overlooked.

Over the decades, his collection grew alongside his knowledge. Each piece acquired was not just a work of art but a thread in the rich cultural fabric of Hawai‘i — a legacy he has preserved and shared through Gallery Hawaiiana. What began as a personal pursuit has become a lifelong mission: to honor, elevate, and protect the history and beauty of Hawaiian art and its creators.

Gallery Director

Tahiti Kulia

With a background in creative direction and storytelling, she brings fresh energy and vision to the gallery. Though new to the world of art sales, Tahiti is deeply inspired by her uncle’s eye and legacy. She’s excited to help share these treasures with a wider audience and to continue learning from the rich history behind each piece.

For the past 16 years, Tahiti has worked as a photographer, graphic designer, and website designer—skills she brings to every element of presentation and curation. Through her creative consulting and marketing studio, Aloha Friday, she helps brands find their voice through strategy, visuals, and experience design. Her deep love for vintage items, fine art, and thoughtfully curated spaces informs her approach at Gallery Hawaiiana, where the past is not just preserved, but reimagined for new generations to appreciate.
